- Paul Hilliam - Musical Director

Paul Hilliam was born in Canterbury and educated in Bournemouth. Following studies in London he worked extensively as an oboist before turning to conducting.
Paul formed the professional chamber orchestra London Camerata in 1984, receiving early encouragement from Lady Barbirolli and Ursula Vaughan Williams. He directed this Orchestra for ten years, performing concerts to the highest critical acclaim throughout the South East of England. Since 1999 Paul has been Principal Conductor and Musical Director of the Heart of England Orchestra. Engagements have taken him to Britain’s most prestigious venues including the Barbican Hall London, Symphony Hall Birmingham and St David’s Hall Cardiff and Buxton Opera House.
Recent work abroad has included concerts and radio broadcasts in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. In 2001 he made his debut in the USA with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra in a programme that included ‘Harmonic Rhythm’, a new concerto for timpani composed by the American, Russell Peck.
Alongside his work with professional orchestras, Paul is involved in conducting concerts for children and directing music for a wide range of amateur orchestras and choirs. He has been the Musical Director and principal conductor of the Rutland Sinfonia since 2007.
